The majority of Instrumentation, Electrical and Control Systems equipment will fall into the random failure mode category. This is especially characteristic of low voltage DC and modified sine wave AC electronic equipment. Consequently design and quality control at the manufacturer plays a relatively disproportionate role in the availability and reliability of equipment. The reliability of electronic functional safety systems is an exception and the design, selection, and maintenance of these systems are covered in the IEC 61508 standard.
A robust asset management programme must be instituted by any enterprise that seeks to minimise its operating costs, maximise production, maintain its customer base and reduce risk of operation. It is worth the while for a company to invest into a complete program that involves training of personnel, an evaluation of its existing installed base, inventory, a Computerised Maintenance Management System, interface with operations, procurement, finance and production systems, cost control and real time data integration.
One size doesn’t fit all. A customised system can be developed based on a company’s budget and culture.
It is highly possible that your asset management program will be deficient in some critical areas, or perhaps you are not even aware of the strengths and weaknesses of your existing program. I can work with your operations and maintenance or reliability department to highlight opportunities to improve reliability, availability and Overall Equipment Efffectiveness.
